Differences: A Civil War Novel
October 11 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Originally written in 1867, Differences was one of the first post-Civil War novels by a Jewish author. Written by Dr. Nathan Mayer, a Union soldier who served as a battlefield surgeon and fought at Antietam, the book has been recently edited and republished by Professor Steven Bowman. Bowman will join MSJE Executive Director Kenneth Hoffman in conversation for a free, virtual event exploring what the book reveals about Mayer’s wartime experiences, the light it sheds on contemporary Jewish farming life in the South, and its potential influence on later Southern literature such as Gone With the Wind.
