Encountering the Sublime: The Art of Maurice Schmidt | Guest Lecturer Laura Huckaby
May 11 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
MSJE welcomes guest lecturer Laura Huckaby, Curator and Assistant Director of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts in Texas, for a discussion of our current Special Exhibition, “God, Goats and Pickup Trucks: Maurice Schmidt’s Visions of Texas.”
Texas artist Maurice Schmidt has been making art for more than 70 years. Deeply informed by his Jewish faith and the scenes of daily life in South Texas, his paintings, prints, and sculptures touch the senses and the soul. Laura Huckaby will discuss Schmidt’s art in the context of art history and the artist’s life, and tell the story of how the collection came to reside in San Angelo.
Laura Romer Huckaby grew up in Burlington, North Carolina. She earned her undergraduate degree in Art Education from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, and her master’s degree in Art History from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Laura took further graduate-level training in linguistics and anthropology and spent time in Papua New Guinea as a missionary. She has been with the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts since 2012.
