We are excited to announce our new expansion, which will create the brand-new Southern Jewish Family Research Center on the third floor of the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience. This is YOUR Museum and YOUR new Center – Help Us Grow!

THE SOUTHERN JEWISH FAMILY RESEARCH CENTER

The Southern Jewish Family Research Center will be an incredible hands-on resource for researchers, family historians, Museum Members and visitors who are doing the important work of exploring and preserving Southern Jewish history. With an emphasis on the connections between Jewish families across the South, the Center will bring a distinctly Southern flavor to “Jewish Geography.” Comprised of five beautifully designed, named spaces, this Center extends the Museum’s mission of encouraging new understanding and appreciation for identity, diversity, and acceptance, and  expanding our appreciation for the American experience. Construction has already begun!

The build will include:

The Reference Library and Reading Room is the heart of the Southern Jewish Family Research Center and will serve as a repository for the materials donated to our growing research collection, including published works, Southern and Jewish reference materials, and most importantly, individual family genealogies and community histories.

This space will provide the museum with a facility to house our most important and sensitive archival materials, making them easily accessible to researchers, Museum members, and the public alike.

This is where museum staff will perform the important work of conservation, cataloging, digitizing, and preparing archives for study, online accessibility, and exhibition.

In this studio, we will record people’s oral histories, preserving the precious living memories of the Southern Jewish experience. This space will also serve as our Distance Learning studio, where we can videoconference these stories and others directly into classrooms across the country.

Our 900-square-foot Special Exhibition Gallery will give us the space to curate dynamic changing exhibits, as well as share popular traveling exhibits, expanding on and adding to the stories told in our core exhibitions.
